Critical Thinking is defined by the ability to think clearly and rationally. It includes the ability to engage in reflective and independent thinking. Someone with critical thinking skills is able to do the following : understand the logical connections between ideas.

I firmly believe that this skill can increase your IELTS score by a full band, and it is something that we practice at Will Academy through analytical thinking. In other words, we verbally break down or loosen ideas to better understand them, therefore putting you in a better place to answer questions.

This is particularly important in IELTS reading, which is the part of the test where everyone should be answering 30+ questions correctly.  With practice and discussion and more practice and discussion, thinking beyond what the question asks is crucial in finding support of the correct answers in the passage. To earn a band score above 6, it is necessary to be able to make clear and understand a writer’s opinion.

Additionally, critical thinking skills are important in IELTS writing. It is also important that you can make your position clear, as well being able to support and develop your ideas. Without these skills, it will be difficult to achieve a Band 6 or Band 7 in Writing Task 2. Read online news articles and use them as a model for your own writing.  Furthermore, Task 1 requires the ability to analyze diagrams while selecting key trends, making comparisons and organizing information cohesively.  This is very often an arduous task for second language students.

Will Academy takes great pride in making every effort to help students develop critical thinking skills. Critical thinking is not only an IELTS skill. . . it is an invaluable life skill.
